School’s out for the summer! Well…almost. As we near the end of winter, it’s time to start thinking about summer job opportunities. But before you begin the search, you should think first about what a part time job could mean for you now – and for your future.
A part time job during the summer months can be anything. Some students may relish the idea of working in a business-type setting, while others may opt to sling snow cones. Either way, a part time job is a beneficial way to spend the summer months for a variety of reasons.
First and foremost, a part-time summer job provides you with a steady paycheck. Without a class schedule and homework to keep you busy, you can devote yourself to a nearly full-time job for two months in order to make money. Those paychecks can then be saved to either help pay tuition or go towards gas money, late night pizza orders and clothing during the school year.
This is, perhaps, the number one reason students seek summer employment. While it’s no doubt important, there are other reasons to seek a part-time job for the summer, which pay off in later years.
Students should keep in mind that making too much money over the summer can actually hurt their chances at landing some financial aid, believe it or not. According to NerdWallet, students can make at most $6,660. After that amount, their financial aid package could be impacted; however, students would have to be making excellent hourly wages and working full-time in order to hit that figure.
As you consider part time jobs for the summer, though, do the math. Make sure your summer job salary helps you and doesn’t hurt you in the long run.
Your working experience won’t just get your foot in the door by buffing up your resume, it can also help you successfully get another job. Hiring managers and supervisors ask a majority of job interview questions about past work experience and circumstances. These summer jobs give you something to talk about that reflects who you are as an employee.
Never underestimate the value of a part-time job. Any role you serve in is a step toward building your eventual career.
